Retaining Walls

 

Introduction: 
Retaining walls are built in order to hold back earth which would otherwise move downwards. Their purpose is to stabilize slopes and provide useful areas at different elevations, e.g. terraces for agriculture, buildings, roads and railways. Retaining walls are designed to support both static and dynamic loads. The hight of all these retaining walls is usually around 5-12m high. A wall as high as 30m can also be created using special materials and techniques.

       

Block Faced Retaining Walls

 When used as part of a Block faced retaining wall, CTM- Geogrid adds strength to the wall by integrating the fill material behind the wall with the structure of the wall itself. The large open spaces or voids between the bands of tensile material allow for the interlocking of the compacted fill materials with the CTM-Geogrid. 

The geogrids are placed in layers, filled with compacted soil along the entire anchorage longitude, according to the design; and the use of concrete block provided an aesthetic finishing (wall face).

Connected by gravity and friction systems to the body of the retaining wall ( the CTM- Geogrid is sandwiched between courses of retaining wall units), this interlocked fill material and wall becomes more resistant to settling and movement. 
The CTM-Geogrid acts as an anchor for the retaining wall, inhibiting its ability to separate from the fill behind it. This extends the serviceable life of the retaining wall as well as makes it capable of holding back greater volumes of material than if retaining wall units were used alone.

Such specialized projects require the use of special PVC coated CTM- Geogrid as a soil reinforcement system.

Panel Faced Retaining Wall

CTM Geogrids are used for reinforcement of soil along with panel faced retaining walls. Retaining walls are built in order to hold back or retain earth which would otherwise move downwards.

Their purpose is to stabilize and retain earth filled retaining walls and provide useful areas at different elevations, e.g. approach roads for flyovers, buildings, roads and railways. Retaining walls are designed to support both static and dynamic loads.

These panels employ a loop and rod connection between the geogrid reinforcement and create hard faced near vertical retaining wall

Most panels employ a frictional and tongue  groove connection between the Geogrid reinforcement and the panel.

The CTM-Geogrid acts as an anchor for the retaining wall, inhibiting its ability to separate from the fill behind it, such as during freeze/thaw periods. This extends the serviceable life of the retaining wall as well as makes it capable of holding back greater volumes of fill material.

CTM- Geogrids are suitable for use with a wide range of segmental panels. The use of PVC coated CTM-Geogrid reinforcement and along with locally available backfill gives retaining walls a cost advantage.
